The Journey

Destinations are picturesque moments to savor, but the journeys are what make them so immensely meaningful.

Education is a journey. It is a great and noble enterprise that hopefully becomes a way of life. In the meantime, strap on your boots, and don't forget to bring your sense of humor.

As children grow and learn, there is a discovery of interests, talents and struggles. As a teacher you will encounter the same within yourself. Exciting turns can come from the adjustments to overcome struggles and exploit those interests and talents. ADHD inspired the addition of more physical activity and spurts of free time throughout our schedule. It remained mandatory for all, because it helped everyone’s energy, focus, memory and mood.

The strategizing and traversing, the laughable flops and ridiculous turn of events, the uncertainties and persevering, the clever little tips and hacks that make all the difference...the journey is what makes us.

It may take a while and quite a bit of exploring for a child to find their knack. Interests can be short lived, but it is immensely helpful in a young person’s development to find one and commit to it. One child’s interest in art and tinkering led to the devoted study of AutoCAD (design software used by engineers and architects). She and others began experimenting with 3D printing. Her ambition and dedicated work ethic eventually won her a genuine architectural internship long before college.

Along this way you will find there is not enough time to make the most of your child‘s potential. Don’t stress about that. Help them to recognize the marvelous reality of potential yet unrealized, because there will always be more to explore later. As with every great journey, homeschooling will have curiosities, monotony, mischief, triumphs, difficulty, and bonding through it all. Take pix, stargaze and roast marshmallows over a campfire started with homework for tinder.
