Purpose

Homeschooling is an extension of parenthood, and all your good intentions. Now that those good intentions extend fully into academics, defining your quest to give your child something more is a critical step in maximizing opportunity.  This is not because you are likely to satisfy your ideal. It is more like, as Les Brown said, “Shoot for the moon.  If you miss, you will still be among the stars.”

Why did you first consider homeschooling?

Whatever sparked your independence and caused you to first question common educational environments or practices, jot it down.  Moments can be powerful references, especially when we question ourselves. Maybe there wasn’t a clear moment, rather a convergence of roots fortifying a growing belief there were better possibilities. Whatever the case, ink it so you can mine it later.

A few well crafted words can cut through the clouding emotions and complexities of the everyday like a scope bringing a target into focus.  Think of the Nike slogan with a battery of athletes overcoming their personal challenges “Just do it.”  A purpose is even more powerful than a motto.  As Chris Burkmenn said, “If you remember why you started, you will know why you must continue.”

Not good at crafting words?  Incorporate a few inspiring quotes, but first, rummage through your own ideas.  The concepts that originate in you will likely be the most meaningful long term.  My blog post “Defining Your Ideal” has questions to ignite your thoughts and draw out your own words.  Let your insight loose, and let interesting possibilities linger.

Clearly stated intentions

are like a compass,

allowing one to get around setbacks with determination

and to recognize unpaved opportunities.

"Most people are mirrors, reflecting the moods and emotions of the times; few are windows, bringing light to the dark corners where troubles fester.  The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows."   -Sydney J Harris
